Chesterfield House

Chesterfield house was a grand house of magnificent stature

Built in the Mayfair area of London between the years 1747 to 1752 by Philip Stanhope, who was in fact the 4th Earl of Chesterfield who the later parts of his life here.

The exterior of the property was in a Palladian style whilst the interior was an elegant baroque style.

It was describe by the French Travel writer of the time Pierre-Jean Grosley as equal to the hotels of nobility in Paris.

In 1869 the house was sold to Charles Magiac as he faced demolition. Charles Magiac constructed a row of terrace housing to the rear of the property, he named this area

Chesterfield Gardens.

The house was finally demolished in 1937 in what now is Chesterfield Street. In its place is a large block of flats.

We feel the best Chesterfield sofa to mark this fine house would be the Chesterfield Windsor sofa in a fine Deluxe Tudor Chestnut to suite.
